THE IMPORTANCE OF PHARMACEUTICAL CARE IN THE CHOICE AND USE OF IRON-CONTAINING MEDICINES IN ADOLESCENTS WITH IRON-DEFICIENT STATES

Abstract

Globally, iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) ranks first among all types of anemia and leads to a poor quality of life and reduced ability to work. Iron deficiency anemia is most common in pregnant women, children, and adolescents.The aim of the study was to investigate the peculiarities of pharmaceutical care in the choice and use of iron-containing medicines, as well as to determine the role of pharmacists in raising awareness of pharmacy visitors (adolescents, adolescent representatives) and ensuring the effectiveness of treatment of adolescents with iron-deficient states.A complex of general scientific and special methods: theoretical, generalization method, data systematization, comparison, methods of studying literary sources, analysis, questionnaire have been used in the present work. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 30 pharmacy visitors (adolescents, representatives of adolescents) who addressed pharmacy for iron-containing drugs for the treatment of iron-deficient states in teenagers.The survey results showed that 66.7% of teenagers had no previous experience using iron-containing drugs. Before purchasing iron-containing drugs for the treatment of IDA, 90% of adolescents consulted a doctor. 83.3% of adolescents bought iron-containing drugs on the recommendation of a doctor, the remaining 16.7% – on the recommendation of a pharmacist. Only 73.3% of respondents read the instructions for use of drugs, including iron-containing ones. 80% of pharmacy visitors always receive proper advice from a pharmacist. Only 66.7% of adolescents take iron preparations correctly.Conclusions. Pharmaceutical care plays an important role in increasing the awareness of adolescents (representatives of adolescents) about iron-containing drugs, providing them with access to informed support. In this context, the contribution of pharmaceutical workers is important. When dispensing iron-containing drugs from the pharmacy, the primary role of the pharmacist is to implement pharmaceutical care and provide an appropriate level of pharmaceutical care to ensure rational and safety treatment of iron-deficient states. An important task is to develop a pharmacist’s protocol to optimize pharmaceutical care when dispensing iron-containing drugs.
