Abstract

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is one of the major challenges in modern gynecology and has significant medical and social consequences for women of reproductive age. It is characterized by infection of the upper genital tract and is associated with an increased risk of infertility, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain, and psycho-emotional disorders. The combination of these complications has a substantial negative impact on patients’ quality of life, limiting their physical, psychological, and social functioning. The aim of this article is to summarize current scientific evidence on the impact of pelvic inflammatory disease on the quality of life of women of reproductive age. The review analyzes published data addressing the long-term consequences of PID, including reproductive dysfunction, infertility, chronic pain syndromes, and their association with psychological well-being and social adaptation. The results of the reviewed studies indicate that the prospect of future infertility is one of the most significant factors adversely affecting the quality of life of women with PID. Considerable variability in the perception of infertility has been identified, depending on demographic, cultural, and reproductive characteristics, as well as on previous experiences with conception difficulties. A substantial proportion of women, particularly those from socially vulnerable groups, do not seek specialized medical care due to financial, organizational, and informational barriers, which further worsens prognosis and quality of life. The available evidence highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to the management of patients with pelvic inflammatory disease, including not only timely treatment of the infectious process but also fertility-preserving strategies, psychological support, and improved access to reproductive health services. Further research in this field is essential for the development of effective preventive and rehabilitative interventions aimed at improving the quality of life of women of reproductive age affected by PID
