ALGORITHM FOR FORMING THE ETHICS AND PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPISTS AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS

Abstract

The process of shaping the ethics and professional behavior of future physical therapy and occupational therapy specialists is revealed as one of the ways to improve the effectiveness of therapy and rehabilitation. The significance of the Code, which defines the professional behavior expected of physical therapists and occupational therapists in Ukraine when they carry out their professional/practical activities, is revealed. The Code guarantees safety and promotes the well-being of people with disabilities. An algorithm of principles for preparing future specialists in the field of health care and social security for professional activity is substantiated. The key principles of professional ethics are highlighted, namely: respect for the individual; “do no harm” (non-maleficence); charity; justice; confidentiality; responsibility. The algorithm for the formation of ethics and professional behavior of physical therapists and occupational therapists in the process of obtaining a profession is also described: competence; communication; informed consent; scientifically based practice; financial integrity. The advantages of a deontological approach to the professional training of future specialists in physical therapy and occupational therapy are highlighted. The deontological approach to shaping the ethics of physical therapists and occupational therapists deepens the system of knowledge about professional moral and ethical principles and norms of behavior of future specialists in relation to objects of production and social activity. The forms of activity (lectures, practical classes, clinical practice, writing term papers, scientific work, exchange of experience, master classes, trainings) of future specialists expand their functions and contribute to the formation of their readiness for the qualified performance of professional duties. It has been emphasized that the deontological relationships between physical therapists and occupational therapists should be based on “human-to-human” relationships. This approach takes into account trust, empathy, respect for the patient, and professional cooperation between members of a multidisciplinary team.
