Abstract

The article substantiates the relevance of developing deontological competence in future doctors under the challenging conditions caused by martial law in Ukraine. It emphasizes the need for innovative approaches to the professional training of medical students, particularly in the context of digitalization, internationalization, and the competency-based approach. The proposed Hybrid Technology for the Development of Deontological Competence (HTDDC) is implemented at the Department of Latin and Foreign Languages of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University through the integration of fundamentals of deontology into the syllabus of the course “English for Medical Purposes.” The HTDDC is suitable as an educational tool in blended, distance, or face-to-face learning formats. The technology incorporates traditional e-learning tools (such as electronic tests and social media platforms), video conferencing systems, and updated educational resources within a virtual university environment, including instructional video lectures, interactive texts, and videos accompanied by tasks aimed at evaluating comprehension. In addition, the HTDDC offers training exercises designed to develop communicative competence and professionalism, i.e., listening and reading skills, as well as professional oral communication. The research involved 407 first-year medical students in the specialty of Medicine. Theoretical and empirical research methods, including statistical analysis of survey data, confirmed the high effectiveness of the implemented technology: the average effectiveness score was 8.14 out of 10. The HTDDC components (video lectures, interactive texts, tasks for developing analytical reading and critical thinking, listening exercises, and digital storytelling) support the development of moral and ethical qualities, communicative competence, and professionalism. However, some respondents provided critical feedback, indicating a requirement to improve the HTDDC. The study highlights the prospects for further adaptation of the technology through the inclusion of interactive case studies and enhancement of educational content based on students’ expectations.
