Abstract

The study presents the results of the first experience of teaching the basic principles of family-centered care (FCC) in Ukraine to students of the 4th year of specialties 222 “Medicine” and 228 “Pediatrics” of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University (LNMU). In order to assess the quality of the implementation of FCC principles teaching, online testing of students was conducted on the google.com/forms platform: 170 students participated in the entrance survey, 176 – in the final one. The teaching course on the basic principles of family-centered care included 20 hours of study, of which 2 hours were lectures, 6 hours – practical classes, and 12 hours – independent work of students within the “Social medicine, public health” discipline (Content Module 2 “Public Health”). For the effective implementation of the FCC teaching course in the education of students, the teachers of the department developed methodological recommendations for each topic of lectures, practical classes and independent work, which were optimized by the Department of Ukrainian Studies and the Department of Latin and Foreign Languages of the University and received positive reviews from colleagues from other medical HEIs of Ukraine. The results of the student survey proved the feasibility of implementing this course: 92.05±2.04% of the surveyed students positively evaluated the presentation of the material, while 86.36±2.59% confirmed the need for targeted training on professional communication with patients’ families while studying at a medical university. The experience gained in starting the teaching of the basic principles of family-centered care at Danylo Halytsky LNMU is topical for implementation in the educational process of other higher medical education institutions of Ukraine.
